“Travel by Taste” Edition

When the Gebert team first tasted wine from their Gewürztraminer barrel after the fermentation, they suddenly found themselves on a tropical island due to the unusually exotic aromas. An effect that the team definitely wanted to share with you. In addition to the Gewürztraminer, they created two cuvées, which could hardly be more different, and launched the special edition “Travel-by-Taste”. The two cuvées and the Gewürztraminer bear the names of various travel destinations and are not only new on the wine list, but also stand out visually:
The team decorated their otherwise rather plain bottle design for these special wines with matching photos by Thai photographer Tar Tawatchai. The atmospheric pictures make it easier to imagine the respective locations and thus also the style of the wines.

The Wine

Story

This cuvée fits the garden or the park like a bee to a flower. When smelling the summer cuvée, simply close your eyes and imagine a lush floral landscape on the small Portuguese island of Madeira, with a light breeze and a gentle rustle, of which you don’t know exactly whether it is the leaves of the trees or whether it is the coast around the next bend.

The wine was created at the Gebert winery as part of the “Travel by Taste” line. The cuvée was to be summery and flowery, fresh and not too overloaded. Scheurebe, with its flowery bouquet, was chosen as the blending partner early on. But only after long tasting and dozens of samples from various tanks was the final cuvée set: a few green Silvaner notes, some freshness from the Riesling and a touch of herbaceous body from the Rivaner harmoniously complement the Scheurebe. A blend that not only delights guests of the vineyard at the Gebert winery, but has also been awarded a Chamber Prize Coin and three stars by Selection Genussmagazin.

Accordingly, the wine goes well with Mediterranean dishes, seafood or pasta. Ideal are some tapas with Portuguese delicacies. Of course, the summer cuvée “Madeira” is also excellent as a soloist – and not only on sunny days. With a warm jumper and a little imagination, it also works wonderfully on more autumnal days.

The Island of Madeira

The flower island, as the Portuguese Madeira is often called, lies 951 km southwest of Lisbon and 737 km west of the African coast. By European standards, it is in the middle of the Atlantic.

The volcanic origin is hard to miss thanks to the steep coasts and forms a wonderful contrast to the varied floral splendour that can be found almost everywhere on the island. Only at the higher altitudes of the island, which have a mountainous character, does it become a little more barren, allowing fantastic views from the high plateaus. From there, the longest irrigation system in the world winds its way down to the valley on the 740 square kilometre island: the levadas, along which Madeira can also be wonderfully explored on foot. The often subtropical climate in the south of the island is noticeably different from that in the north, although you can cross and even circle the island by car in one day without any problems.

Varied, flowery, warm and sunny – but now and then also fresh and tart. Whether we are still talking about the island or about the summer cuvée again, we leave that open.

Teamwork

Making great wines from small grapes. This is the ambitious goal of our extraordinary team, which brings together different talents and generations in Siefersheim with joie de vivre and innovative spirit. Strong characters meet a traditional winery with excellent sites. The result is a dynamic that inspires. An ambitious project with an adventure character.

Terroir

In addition to human influences, it is the grape varieties, soils and microclimatic conditions that give our wines their profile and authenticity. In four vineyard sites with different geographical, geological and vegetative conditions, we cultivate wines that clearly differ in character and aroma, yet reveal their common origin.
