“Travel by Taste” Edition

When the Gebert team first tasted wine from their Gewürztraminer barrel after the fermentation, they suddenly found themselves on a tropical island due to the unusually exotic aromas. An effect that the team definitely wanted to share with you. In addition to the Gewürztraminer, they created two cuvées, which could hardly be more different, and launched the special edition “Travel-by-Taste”. The two cuvées and the Gewürztraminer bear the names of various travel destinations and are not only new on the wine list, but also stand out visually:
The team decorated their otherwise rather plain bottle design for these special wines with matching photos by Thai photographer Tar Tawatchai. The atmospheric pictures make it easier to imagine the respective locations and thus also the style of the wines.

The Wine

Story

In the hot 2020 vintage, the Gewürztraminer grew in a steep Gumbsheim site with southern exposure and ripened correspondingly healthy, but quickly and early. In the extremely warm autumn, haste was required to harvest the wine at strong but not excessive sugar levels and to preserve the bouquet of the grapes. The typical notes of a Gewürztraminer were already hidden before fermentation, at the must stage, behind notes that are usually more associated with a Sauvignon Blanc. The experiment of additionally vinifying the wine with a fruit-enhancing pure yeast in stainless steel tanks began. A few weeks later, the courage paid off: The result was a potpourri of exotic aromas that you constantly want to smell.

A wine that takes us on a slightly exuberant trip to tropical climes. From the weekly market with exotic spices along the water, past palm trees, fruit stands and colourful hustle and bustle. Mango, lychee, a little pineapple. Later roses and only in the finish more varietal aromas like nutmeg, still somewhat hidden behind the opulent fruit.

A Thai curry or fresh fish goes very well with this wine, but particularly curious noses are of course also welcome to taste it solo.

By the way: If you prefer wines with residual sweetness, “Ko Tao” will surprise you. With 7g of residual sugar, it is dry, but its fruitiness and low acidity make it quite mild.

The Island of Ko Tao

Ko Tao is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist spots and also called “Turle Island”, because it is an important breeding ground for hawksbill and green turtles. Due to tourism and El Nino, the paradise of turtles and corals was endangered in the meantime. Today, the island offers some of the best diving in the Gulf of Thailand.

As the nearby Ko Samui, Ko Tao has a tropical monsoon climate. The temperature is well above the threshold of 18 °C (64 °F) year round, indeed closer to an average temperature of 28 °C (82 °F). These are the conditions where tropial fruits like Mango, Pineapples and Papayas grow and the reason why the wine reminds of this place.

Teamwork

Making great wines from small grapes. This is the ambitious goal of our extraordinary team, which brings together different talents and generations in Siefersheim with joie de vivre and innovative spirit. Strong characters meet a traditional winery with excellent sites. The result is a dynamic that inspires. An ambitious project with an adventure character.

Terroir

In addition to human influences, it is the grape varieties, soils and microclimatic conditions that give our wines their profile and authenticity. In four vineyard sites with different geographical, geological and vegetative conditions, we cultivate wines that clearly differ in character and aroma, yet reveal their common origin.
